The star, who has been described as the next Russell Crowe, plays William in the rags-to-riches story of a medieval misfit who jousts his way to fame and fortune.
Arriving at the Odeon in Leicester Square last night, Ledger said of the comparison with Crowe: "It's an easy comparison to make I guess but there are certainly no complaints from me - Russell might have a few though."
Asked about his choice of attire for the evening he joked: "My jacket was designed by Paddington Bear."
A Knight's Tale, which also stars Rufus Sewell, Paul Bettany and Laura Fraser, features pop superstar Robbie Williams on the soundtrack. The former Take That man teamed up with rock legends Queen to record an updated version of their classic hit We Are The Champions.
Among other celebrities who turned out for Thursday's glitzy premiere were Big Brother's Helen Adams.
But the Welsh blonde did not arrive with her own knight in shining armour, boyfriend Paul Clarke. Instead she was accompanied by her other former housemate Amma Antwi-Agyei.
Helen was wearing a stunning black lacy dress and waved at the crowd who cheered her arrival.
Supermodel
Nell McAndrew wore a revealing dress decorated with gold leaves and other
stars included Survivor millionaire Charlotte Hobrough, who was
accompanied by her husband Mark, pop stars The Honeyz and sports presenter
Gabby Yorath.
